“Makeup & Modesty: A Muslimah’s Guide“

Makeup is a form of self-expression, but in Islam, it comes with balance and intention. Muslim women are allowed to wear makeup, especially at home or around close family (mahrams). However, when stepping into public spaces, modesty becomes the focus.

The Qur’an encourages women “not to display their beauty except what is apparent” (Surah An-Nur 24:31). This doesn’t mean beauty is forbidden—rather, it should be respected and preserved.

1.For Private Use:A woman can wear makeup at home or in front of her mahrams (husband, father, brother, etc.).

2.Modesty in Public:When in public or in front of non-mahram men, makeup should be minimal or avoided to preserve modesty. The Qur’an says:“…and not to display their beauty except what is apparent…”(Surah An-Nur 24:31)

3.Intention Matters:Makeup should not be used to attract unlawful attention. It should be clean, pure, and not imitate immoral trends.

4.Prayer Rules:Makeup doesn’t invalidate prayer, but wudu (ablution) must be made with a clean face—no waterproof layers blocking water.

5.Avoid Harmful Ingredients: Use products that are halal, free of alcohol or pig-derived ingredients.
